Prune the Product Tree

Prune the Product Tree is a template that enables teams to explore how the roadmap can evolve in ways that better align stakeholder needs with business leader intentions (e.g., Product Managers / Product Owners / Portfolio Managers). When used with external customers and stakeholders, Prune the Product Tree is a powerful market research tool. In Prune the Product Tree, we represent a roadmap as a tree. Apples represent features, projects, epics or other aspects of the offering that provide tangible benefits. Water drops placed in the roots represent opportunities for improvement and enablers or infrastructure. Rotten Apples capture defects or problems The natural metaphor of growth enables a team to explore their ideas for growth over time, with items closer to the trunk representing near-term or tactical focus and items farther from the trunk representing long-term or strategic focus. Instructions: 1. Participants place items into the template. 2. Participants review items, clustering and organizing them to capture their intentions. 3. The results should inform Solution and PI Roadmaps and may be useful in Lean Portfolio Management.
